Sony has announced that later in 2009 it will be releasing video game and movie hybrid discs that will contain both a film and a video game based on the film.

“The hybrid discs will leverage the huge disc capacity advantage of the PS3, and will give fans even greater depth and value when they purchase a movie or a game,” says Nelmari Claassens, Sony Pictures Marketing Manager at SterKinekor Entertainment.

Film property is often licensed for video game adaptations, and this revolutionary concept will tie these two entertainment arenas together into one value for money package.

“The way Sony sees the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc. Developers have been commenting on this eventuality for a while now, and this year will definitely see the release of the movie/game hybrid from Sony,” Claassens continues.
“This however, isn’t a first of its kind.  We saw with the release of Stealth on UMD™ for PSP™ the movie with level 1 of the game on a single disc.  We again got a glimpse of this with the release of Men In Black on Blu-ray with the interactive trivia game via the BD-Live enhancement.”

While this would be the first instance of a game and movie coming on the same disc, it would not be the first time a game and movie have been sold together. Notable for the Blu-ray crowd was the Collector’s Edition release of ‘Stranglehold’, which included a Blu-ray release of ‘Hard Boiled’. As of today, buying the game is the only way to watch ‘Hard Boiled’ on Blu-ray.
